The pleasant surprise that is Phichit in central Thailand

I lived in Phichit (a mostly rural province in  Central Thailand) for a few weeks back in 2012. And I loved it because the food was so cheap, it was laid back and relaxed, and I still enjoyed a crazy and fun Songkran there.

My Thai wife recently decided to sell her house in Phetchabun, because she wants to be closer to her family in Phichit, and because food is cheaper there.

I kept my house in Phetchabun (I'm a Thai national, so I do own the land my house is on), but I spend much of my time in Phichit with my wife, our son and nieces.

As for Phichit, I've explained in many YouTube videos, mangoes are so cheap there (8 baht per kilo or 2 baht per kilo if you buy mega huge bulks), and when lived in Phichit in 2012, people would give away mangoes they couldn't sell, and it's still the same now.

Not just mangoes, but land, meat, rice, other fruit and even Western food such as Pizza and KFC are cheaper in Phichit.

The Western food in Phichit isn't just cheaper but more abundant. Easy to find pizza stores in rural Phichit, where as in Phetchabun, you need to go to Lom Sak city.

The rural town I've been staying at in Phichit has 2 pizza stalls at the market, and the pizza sold by them is good and cheap.

Fried chicken in Phichit is 40 baht for a huge piece that's almost a double breast, or 35 baht for a big thigh piece. In Phetchabun, a big double breast would cost 55 baht, and a thigh piece would be 40-50 baht

Everywhere I go in Phichit, there's people selling delicious food on the roadside for cheap.

And there's lots of nice green pastures and country fields. Although Phetchabun has bigger and popular mountains and waterfalls.

Lom Kao does have the Laos boat racing festival which is awesome fun, but I've been told Phichit has it's own version of it.

I loved Phichit back in 2012 and I still like it now.

In fact, some of the most fun I've had was the Songkran in Phichit in 2012 where at a temple, women wearing revealing clothing were dancing on a stage and alcohol was being given out (yes, at a temple), and people saw me and shouted farang! Farang! And asked me to dance on the stage with the women while we drank alcohol, ate barbecue food and a truck was spraying water over us.
